Numbness or pain in the legs or feet may often start with a problem in the lower back where the sciatic nerve originates, and then goes along the path of the nerve. Also, it could be the blood vessels. When arteries get blocked and blood flow will be reduced, these eventually results to pain and numbness. The affected leg will feel cooler rather than the other leg.
There are various reasons why a person suffers from numbness or pain in the legs or feet such as sprain or strain of the lower back due to macro-trauma or repetitive micro-trauma, misalignment of the lumbar spine that is often exacerbated by increased or decreased lumbar curvature, disc herniations, bulges, or nerve entrapments, or being overweight. All of these can cause inflammation and pain in the affected part. Inflammation of the nerves may also cause loss of sensation, weakness, tingling, and numbness of the lower extremities.
One may be surprised to know that even sneezing can cause pain or numbness to the legs or feet. The discs in the lower back supply the sensory and motor function to the lower extremities. A disc could have shifted in the past and a micro-trauma such as stumbling or sneezing can inflame the lumbar region.
Another cause can be diabetes. It is well-known that diabetes affects limbs especially the feet. Having leg or feet problems may be indications of growing complications from diabetes. This may also reflect a neurological disease that attacks the feet and the other organs as well. Other medical conditions that can affect the feet and legs are arthritis, neuromuscular diseases, hypertension, osteoporosis, pregnancy, and medications.
Anyone with numbness or pain in their legs or feet should visit a chiropractor for an examination. Chiropractors are spine care professionals that are well suited to administer diagnostic exams and treatment for patients with this kind of problem. Patients can be managed with physical therapy, medications, injections and the intervertebral disc decompression which is a non-invasive and non-surgical method.
In clinical trials, it is proven that chiropractic treatment can be able to provide long-term relief and restoration to patients with leg and feet problems. A 7-year-old male who once suffered from severe leg pains from hitting his head hard from a fall against the floor. It was found that the child has an injury in his upper cervical spine. He was relieved from his leg pain after he was being administered with upper cervical care.
A 29-year- old runner had been running during high school and college, but decided to stop due to chronic achilles tendonitis. During his initial examination, it was discovered that he was suffering from spinal injury at his upper neck. After having his neck injury corrected through chiropractic care, the pain completely healed and never came back. Once again, he was able to continue running 60 miles per week.
A 48-year-old female suffered from neck pain, numbness and tingling down her arms and legs, and headaches, since she had an auto accident 10 years ago. The examination revealed that the woman had an upper neck injury as a result of her accident. After her first upper cervical adjustment, all of the numbness and tingling she felt before were gone. Followed by a few adjustments, she has been living free from symptoms and pain ever since.
