A pet, especially a dog, is a member of the family. I grew up with a Weimaraner and two Airdales. We all want what's best for them, like we do ourselves, our kids, our family. Many are now supplementing their dog's diet with Omega 3s, feeding them all-natural or organic dog food, or raw meat and veggies. But what about chiropractic? Is that for dogs?
The answer is a resounding "YES!" Chiropractic is for any mammal with a brain, a spinal cord, spinal nerves and a spine to protect it. Both dogs and us start our as a 1/2 cell from the male dog and 1/2 cell from the female dog.
Dogs also have a spine, in fact very similar to our own. When you rotate the dog spine to standing up, it looks almost exactly like a human spine. Humans have 24 spinal vertebrae, 7 in the neck (cervical), 12 in the back (thoracic) and 5 in the low back (lumbar). We also have a fused sacrum and coccyx. Dogs have 27 vertebrae, 7 in the cervical, 13 in the back, and 7 in the lumbar. Dogs also have a fused sacrum.
So what's the difference? Besides number, there isn't one. Both us and dogs rely on the Innate Intelligence of the body to express life. That intelligence is transmitted through the body via the brain and spinal cord. As long as the nerve impulse can flow freely, the dog will express all the health it is capable of. The spine's job is to protect the spinal cord, unless something happens. There could be interference to that flow of nerve energy, if the dog is subluxated, the dog will not be expressing all the life it is capable of and the dog's body will begin to malfunction.
AD Speransky, the great Russian neurophysiologist, proved this is his landmark book, "A Basis for the Theory of Medicine" in the 1920s and 1930s. Unfortunately his research was directly done on dogs in Soviet Russia and it would never be allowed today, but Speransky proved that he could irritate any nerve in the body to produce any disease known to man. In one instance, he made a dog blind by irritating the sciatic nerve. He would irritate the nervous system and just see what happened to the dog, its organs, etc. He was able to create any disease and symptom known to man, just by irritating the nervous system.
Speransky was interested in giving medicine a theory to work with instead of just reversing symptoms. What he did in effect was prove chiropractic, though he didn't know at the time. A subluxation is the most devastating type of irritation known to the nervous system. If this happens to your dog, just how much life is he expressing?
Dogs respond much better to chiropractic than humans. Their only connection to the Innate Intelligence of the body, the Inborn Wisdom, is through the nervous system. Dogs don't have limiting beliefs as humans do. Most humans can slow their healing time by their own disbelief. Tremendous research has been done on this, especially by the great cancer surgeon Bernie Siegel.
Does it seem a little weird to take your dog to the chiropractor? It shouldn't. There is no reason dogs should suffer and take drugs instead. Chiropractors look for nerve interference, the cause of malfunction. The vet looks to treat symptoms and disease. Many times we're stuck in the medical mindset and can't break out. The easiest way to rethink that is to ask if we'd give our healthy kids the same medicine as our sick kid. The answer is of course no because it would make the healthy kid sick. So what happens when we give chemicals to a dog with an already depressed immune system and sick. Chemicals make the symptom go away, but further depress and already depressed immune system.
As we've determined in our chiropractic studio, both humans and dogs need a good nerve supply to work properly. If you want to do all you can for your best friend, let him get checked out by your chiropractor.
