When to Call a Chiropractor

As a long time back pain sufferer, I am knowledgeable in deciphering when my back is sore and tight, and when it is seriously out of alignment. Yet, each time I feel an unexpected "tinge" of pain in my neck, back, or shoulders I hope it's simply muscle soreness and hope it will go away. The following are telling signs it is time to call a chiropractor.

If the pain has lasted more than seven days, it's certainly time to make an appointment with your chiropractor. More simple muscle pain will usually dissipate within a few days, so it is important to call your doctor if the pain has not ceased after a full week. Additionally, if ice and/or heat are not alleviating the pain at all, this may be a sign of a more serious injury. Numbness and tingling are both indicators that a muscle is irritated, or being pinched. Therefore, it is vital that you call your chiropractor if you are experiencing these symptoms, to correct a serious problem before it becomes much worse. Another sign that it is time to call your local chiropractor is if you are experiencing pain when breathing. In some cases, pain while inhaling can indicate a rib injury, in which case, medical attention is surely needed. Lastly, an important flag letting you know it is time to pick up the phone is if your back pain is excruciating, and you are unable to perform any of your normal daily tasks. Using a scale of 1-10, decide if your pain is an 8 or higher. If so, please call a doctor.

Other symptoms may occur in which professional chiropractic assistance is required. It is important to pay attention to your body, and to listen to it. Ignoring major warnings signs may make your injury worse, so it is important to listen to what your body is telling you, and make the call to your chiropractor when it is necessary.
